Latin American Chamber Music
Cabo Sur is a music project consisting of voice and cello that was born with the desire to build a bridge between the classical and the folk music worlds. Even though its members, Juana and Natalia, are both originally from Colombia, they met while pursuing their Master’s degrees at Longy School of Music, where they started collaborating in musical projects. Cabo Sur started recently in Colombia and wants to bring Latin-American folk music to the world in a non-traditional setting.
Colombian soprano Juana Monsalve was born in Medellin. She started her musical journey at an early age singing in choirs and playing the guitar. Juana earned her Bachelor’s degree in her hometown at EAFIT University. She was awarded with the Carolina Scholarship to pursue further studies in the Conservatory of the Liceu in Barcelona, Spain.
She has performed in operas, solo recitals and concerts in several Colombian cities, Barcelona and Boston area. Besides being a classical singer, Juana is also a Latin American folk music performer. In 2012, she won the first prize at the Colombian traditional music competition Hatoviejo Cotrafa. She has also been finalist in other Colombian Andean Music and Tango competitions.
Juana finished her Master’s degree at Longy School of Music, and she is currently pursuing her Doctorate in Musical Arts at University of North Texas.
Natalia Bohórquez was born in Bogotá, Colombia. She began playing the cello at age 13 at the Youth Symphony of Colombia School of Music. At age 18 she received the String Performers Scholarship Award from the Universidad de Los Andes, in Bogotá, where she graduated in 2012.
As a member of the Colombian Youth Philharmonic and the National Symphony Orchestra of Colombia, Natalia has performed in various venues around the world such as the Sala Sao Paulo in Brazil, the New World Center in Miami, and the Muscat Opera House in Oman.
Natalia holds a Master of Music Degree from Longy School of Music of Bard College, and is interested in Latin-American and chamber music.
